I coordinate fabric orders for a living. That means I've handled more than a few rush situations where a client discovers, 48 hours before a deadline, that the fabric they ordered won't work. In those moments, I don't have time to talk about branding. I need to solve the fiber problem, fast. Here are the questions I actually answer, in the order I usually hear them.

What exactly are Teijin fibers?

Teijin is a Japanese materials company, and 'Teijin fibers' covers a family of engineered fibers: Twaron aramid (used in protective gear and industrial applications), Tenax carbon fiber (used in composite materials), and Octa specialty polyester (used in apparel and sleeping bags). They also make more conventional polyester and performance fabrics.

What most people don't realize is that these products are very different from each other. If someone asks me whether Teijin fibers are 'good for upholstery,' I need more context. Aramid is overkill for a sofa. Octa is great in fleece but not as a woven furniture textile. The brand name is a quality signal, but it doesn't replace a spec sheet.

Is Teijin Octa fleece worth it?

For active cold-weather layers, yes, if the weight-to-warmth ratio is your priority. Octa is a polyester fiber with a multi-channel cross-section that traps air, so the fleece feels lighter than traditional heavy fleece while still providing real warmth. I've used it for liners on rush orders where the client needed something packable and quick-drying for a mountain guide team, and it worked out well.

The honest limitation: Octa fleece isn't trying to be a thick, traditional fleece for casual lounging. If your customer just wants a hoodie that feels dense and fuzzy, Octa might disappoint. And if you're comparing it to wool, you're comparing apples to oranges. I recommend it when performance matters more than tactile familiarity, but I wouldn't recommend it as a blanket recommendation for all fleece products.

Silk upholstery fabric: luxury or upkeep nightmare?

Silk upholstery fabric is one of those materials that seduces designers and then gets blamed when it doesn't survive a busy family room. It's a natural protein fiber with beautiful luster and good tensile strength, but in normal upholstery use, abrasion resistance is the issue. The most frustrating part is that two silk fabrics can look almost identical and perform completely differently depending on weave and weight.

If you're using silk on a formal chair or a headboard, it can be a no-brainer. If it's going on a sofa that people sit on every day, personally, I'd talk you out of it. Ask for abrasion test results before you fall in love with a swatch. If the supplier can't provide them, that's a red flag.

Cord upholstery fabric: durable enough for everyday use?

Cord upholstery fabric (the ribbed, corduroy-style texture) often performs better in everyday use than people expect. The vertical ribs help hide wrinkles and wear, and the texture feels warmer than flat weaves. The surprise wasn't the durability of good cord—it was how quickly a badly made cord fell apart when I tested it against a cheap synthetic backing.

Construction matters more than the 'cord' label. A cotton-poly cord with a tight weave and a stable backing can handle years of seating. A loose, bargain cord can pill and stretch in one season. My rule of thumb: ask for double rubs (Wyzenbeek) or Martindale cycles (ISO 12947), and compare the same test method. If the vendor looks confused, walk away.

Is viscose a natural fiber?

Short answer: no. Longer answer: it's complicated, and vendors don't always make it clear. Viscose starts as natural cellulose from wood pulp, but it's chemically processed to turn that cellulose into fibers. Most industry categories call it a manufactured fiber or a regenerated cellulose fiber. Another common name is rayon.

In practical terms, it's semi-synthetic: natural in origin, but not a natural fiber like cotton or wool, and not a petroleum-based synthetic like polyester either. This matters because viscose can be marketed as 'from nature' even though the processing is substantial. (Thankfully, that type of marketing is less common now.) For upholstery, viscose drapes well and takes color beautifully, but it can weaken when wet and isn't the first fiber I'd choose for high-abrasion seating. If you want the look with more durability, blend it with a stronger synthetic.

Which fiber should I choose for high-traffic upholstery?

This is where I repeat the same answer until I'm hoarse: the construction matters as much as the fiber. A tightly woven silk can outperform a loosely woven polyester in abrasion tests. That said, for most high-traffic residential or commercial upholstery, I lean toward nylon, polyester, and performance blends because they're predictable and easier to clean.

Take this with a grain of salt: I'm biased toward data. If a fabric is rated for commercial use, I want to see the test method and the number. Ask for ASTM D4157 or ISO 12947 results, then compare numbers from the same test. The fabric's performance, not the fiber's reputation, is what actually gets used.

Should I worry about fiber branding versus performance specs?

Fiber branding is useful because it gives you a starting point. Teijin has a strong reputation for consistency, which matters when you're sourcing materials for something that has to pass a test or survive years of use. But the brand name doesn't tell you how a fabric will behave in a specific construction.

I've handled rush orders where clients specified well-known fiber brand but didn't specify the weave, finish, or abrasion rating. That's how you end up with the wrong material in front of a deadline and no time to reorder. If you ask me, the spec sheet is the first thing to check. A no-name fabric can be perfect for the job if the test data supports it. A famous fiber in the wrong construction is just a fancy mistake.
