In March 2024, we had a client that needed 40 meters of prepreg tape for an urgent repair with a 96-hour window. We contacted three suppliers. Two said they could "probably" make it. Then there's incoming inspection. Teijin provides lot-level certification that feeds directly into your quality system. With generics, you often need to run your own tensile tests. Third-party lab testing runs $300–500 per batch for a full mechanical panel. If you're bringing in ten batches a quarter, that testing cost eats most of the material savings.

One Hidden Factor Worth Naming: Cognitive Load

I have mixed feelings about this whole thing. Part of me wants to consolidate to one distributor and simplify. Another part knows redundancy saved us during a supply chain disruption in late 2023. I compromise with a primary + backup supplier system.

If your deadline is under four weeks — especially under one week — you're buying certainty more than fiber. Pay for the guaranteed delivery window and traceable lot data. The premium is far cheaper than the delay.

The real risk isn't the material itself. It's having to re-plan an entire production schedule because a shipment that was "supposed to arrive Friday" is now "maybe Monday." Whether you're making aerospace brackets, protective equipment, or that outdoor pink fabric order for a client who needs it yesterday — uncertainty is the most expensive line item you can't see on a quote.

That's the real cost of emergency procurement: not the rush fee. The time you lose while waiting on a maybe.
