There Is No Universal Winner. There Is Only the Right Scenario.

I'm the office administrator for a 94-person specialty fabrics distributor. I handle purchasing—roughly $1.2 million a year across 14 vendors. I report to both operations and finance. That means I've learned to separate 'cool product' from 'right product.'

People ask me about materials all the time: Which aramid should I choose, Twaron or Kevlar? Are carbon fiber mustang parts worth the money? What fabric should I use for upholstery? And sometimes, do you know how to hem knit fabric by hand? If you're waiting for one answer, stop. The answer depends on your situation.

Before I order anything, I put the request into one of four scenarios. Here they are.

Scenario 1: Teijin Twaron vs Kevlar for Aerospace Applications

If someone searches 'Teijin Twaron vs Kevlar aerospace applications,' they are usually trying to decide whether to switch a specified aramid material. My answer is the same whether it's Twaron or Kevlar: you need specs, not a brand war. Twaron is Teijin's para-aramid fiber. Kevlar is DuPont's para-aramid fiber. Both are heat-resistant, lightweight, and strong. Both have long histories in aircraft interiors, thermal insulation, and composite panels. The difference is often in the finishing, the product form, and the documentation.

I once compared two aramid suppliers side by side. Same grade, similar price. One provided a complete lot number, a Teijin Aramid BV delivery note, and a test certificate. The other said 'same thing, but we buy from another source.' When I called the manufacturer to verify the second one, the lot number didn't exist. I don't know if the materials were bad; I know the paperwork was not. That contrast made me realize documentation is part of the product.

For aerospace work, ask for:

  • Material data sheet with lot traceability
  • Certification that the product meets the OEM or airframe spec you're using
  • Evidence that the supplier is an authorized route to Teijin Aramid BV material—or an equivalent documented aramid producer

I said 'aerospace grade' once, and the supplier heard 'the expensive one.' Result: I paid for a higher-priced grade that had no benefit for the actual application. The standard should come first, then the grade. If a vendor can't tell you the manufacturing site, I'd flag that as a red flag.

Total cost of ownership—base material, freight, test certificates, and scrap rate—is the number that matters. The lowest quote is not automatically the lowest cost.

If you're making an actual aircraft part, don't switch materials based on a blog post. Run a qualification test and get an engineer to sign off. That's true for Twaron, for Kevlar, for any carbon fiber, and for every fabric I've bought.

Scenario 2: Carbon Fiber Mustang Parts: Real Carbon or Clever Marketing?

This one is a favorite because a colleague asked me to help source a carbon fiber hood for his Mustang. Aftermarket carbon fiber mustang parts are everywhere—hoods, splitters, spoilers, mirror caps. Some are true carbon composite. Some are carbon-look plastic. The first question is not 'which fiber?' It's 'what is the part actually made of?'

If the part is structural, or if it will see heat and vibration, I ask three things:

  1. Is it carbon fiber, or carbon-fiber-reinforced polymer?
  2. What is the layup schedule—fiber weight, weave style, resin type?
  3. Has the fabricator tested the mounting points, not just the surface finish?

I once ordered a 'carbon fiber' hood and skipped the final review because 'it's basically the same as last time.' It wasn't. The weave looked fine, but the mounting holes were 4 mm off. I had to pay return shipping and still lost $400. Now I ask for the CAD drawing before the PO. (Note to self: tolerances are always worth asking about.)

Teijin's Tenax carbon fiber is used by composite fabricators, but when you buy a finished part, you're buying the fabricator's quality control, not just the brand of fiber. In my opinion, a well-made part with a mid-range fiber beats a sloppy part made with Tenax. To be fair, price matters. I get why someone chooses a cheaper part if it's purely cosmetic. If it's a track part that has to stay on at speed, though, you need data—not a thick layer of clear coat.

Also, 'carbon fiber Mustang parts' doesn't mean 'aerospace.' A cosmetic spoiler on a weekend car might be fine with a carbon-look finish. A structural hood needs real engineering. Figure out which one you're in before you call the vendor.

Scenario 3: Upholstery Ticking Fabric: Don't Settle for 'Close Enough'

Upholstery ticking fabric doesn't get as much attention as aramid or carbon, but it's a real purchasing category. Ticking is that woven, usually striped fabric used for sofa arms, mattress covers, and cushions. It has to withstand friction, hold its color, and keep its pattern across the width of the roll.

For upholstery, don't just ask 'is it ticking?' Ask for the abrasion test. In the US, fabric suppliers often use the Wyzenbeek double rub method. For heavy commercial use, I'd want 15,000 double rubs or more—at least, that's been my experience with contract furniture. Residential can be lower. But if the fabric is going to be sat on every day, the look won't save you from a worn-out seat.

Color is another trap. If the piece has to match a brand color, use a standard like Pantone. The industry-standard color tolerance for brand-critical colors is Delta E < 2. Delta E of 2 to 4 is noticeable to trained observers, and above 4 is visible to most people. I had a supplier say 'close enough' and then deliver 500 yards that looked green in daylight. The stripe pattern was perfect. The color was not. Reference: Pantone Color Matching System guidelines.

What I mean is, the supplier's ease with 'close enough' is a clue. The vendor who lists all the details—fiber content, weight, width, finish, cleaning code—is usually the one who also gets the color right. Hidden costs come later (like dye lots, shade bands, and freight). I'd rather see a higher upfront price with all the specs listed than a low price followed by a long list of extras.

Scenario 4: How to Hem Knit Fabric by Hand (Don't Call a Fiber Supplier Yet)

This is the opposite end of the fiber world. If you're asking how to hem knit fabric by hand, you don't need a specialty materials company. You need a needle, some polyester or nylon thread, and patience.

Knit fabric stretches. A normal straight stitch will pop when the fabric is pulled. The hand-sewn version of a stretch-friendly stitch is a narrow zigzag or a catch stitch. Keep the hem relaxed, sew small stitches about 3 mm apart, and don't pull the thread tight. Test on a scrap piece first.

I learned this the hard way. A few years ago I ordered knit fabric for a company event and thought 'I can just hem it with a normal needle.' I knew I should use a stretch-friendly stitch, but I thought, what are the odds? The odds caught up with me when the hems rolled up like window shades after one wash. I re-sewed 24 hems by hand over a weekend, which is why I can tell you with some confidence: the right seam matters as much as the right fiber.

If you're at home doing this, don't call a fiber manufacturer. You don't need an industrial supplier. That's not a criticism—it's a sign of a good buyer: knowing when not to buy.

How to Judge Which Scenario You're In

If you're still unsure, run this quick test:

  • If failure could hurt someone or cost a client money, you're in Scenario 1 or 2. Ask for standards, test reports, and traceability.
  • If you're styling a car and you can live with cosmetic-only, you're in Scenario 2, with a lower performance bar.
  • If you're a furniture maker or designer, you're in Scenario 3. Focus on abrasion, fiber content, and color tolerance.
  • If you're holding a needle and stretchy fabric, you're in Scenario 4. Use a stretch stitch, and don't pull tight.

When I took over purchasing in 2020, I thought the smartest move was to find the lowest price. After five years of managing vendor relationships, I look instead for the supplier who sends the most complete paperwork. Transparency—pricing, specs, test data—is what builds trust. If you ask me, a vendor who lists all fees and limitations upfront usually costs less in the end, even when the quote looks higher.

So don't ask 'Which material is the magic one?' Ask 'What problem am I solving?' Aramid fiber for aerospace? Carbon fiber mustang parts? Upholstery ticking fabric? A hand-sewn knit hem? Each one leads to a different set of requirements. Define the scenario first, and the material choice gets a lot easier.
